An application of the spherical means method in uniqueness proofs of inverse problems.

Résumé : We show an application to uniqueness proofs of inverse problems of a generalization of a Theorem due to Zalcman that states that if a continuous function defined in an open and connected set $\Omega\subset\R^n$ is such that whenever it is null at a point $P\in\Omega$, then its spherical means centered at $P$ are also null, then the function is itself null. The application is the proof of uniqueness for the identification of the reaction coefficient of the diffusion equation.

Caractérisation des algèbres approximables

Résumé : Les algèbres approximables, introduites par Chen, sont celles pour lesquelles un thèorème de type Fujita est vrai. Utilisant des techniques de corps de Newton-Okounkov, nous montrons que de telles algèbres sont des sous-algèbres d’anneaux de sections de diviseurs infinis.

Positivity and qualitative properties of solutions of fourth-order elliptic equations

This thesis concerns the study of fourth-order elliptic boundary value problems and, in particular, qualitative properties of solutions. Such problems arise in various fields, from plate theory to conformal geometry and, compared to their second-order counterparts, they present intrinsic difficulties, mainly due to the lack of the maximum principle.
In the first part of the thesis, we study the positivity of solutions in case of Steklov boundary conditions, which are intermediate between Dirichlet and Navier boundary conditions. They naturally appear in the study of the minimizers of the Kirchhoff-Love functional, which represents the energy of a hinged thin and loaded plate in dependence of a parameter. We establish sufficient conditions on the domain to obtain the positivity of the minimizers of the functional. Then, for such domains, we study a generalized version of the functional. Using variational techniques, we investigate existence and positivity of the ground states, as well as their asymptotic behaviour for the relevant values of the parameter.
In the second part of the thesis we establish uniform a-priori bounds for a class of fourth-order semilinear problems in dimension 4 with exponential nonlinearities. We considered both Dirichlet and Navier boundary conditions and we suppose our nonlinearities positive and subcritical. Our arguments combine uniform estimates near the boundary and a blow-up analysis. Finally, by means of the degree theory, we obtain the existence of a positive solution.

Mathematical Feelings of Space

The notion of space is a broad and complex one, in mathematics alone the word is used in many different ways. It can be regarded as one of the central motivating concepts, for the subject, as Poincaré said mathematicians must aid the philosopher to fathom the notions of number, of space, of time.
Too often mathematical ideas about space and the different ways it can be perceived are buried under the algebraic notations that gain control of the ideas. Yet the mathematical approach, in large part because of this control, is able to distinguish many different flavours of what we might consider “space”.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together mathematicians of various disciplines with artists and scientists to explore the different ways we feel and understand space, in two directions : how the mathematical understanding allows us to express precisely many different common intuitions about space (continuity, discreteness, dimension, tangent line, shape, distance…), and also how logical exploration of mathematical concepts allows us to experiment with new intuitions never seen or felt before, for example, hyperbolic spaces, tiling spaces, Lie Groups, fractals, Cantor sets, Peano curves, devil staircases, p-adic numbers…
The workshop will be held over two days (10-11 October 2017), with time for discussion and conversation. The schedule is flexible on the 11th with space for quick talks and small group discussions. All participants are welcome to suggest a short (5min) talk for the morning on the 11th, or a question or discussion topic for the afternoon.
