SUMMARY: (...): Bob Sturm (Aalborg Univ. Copenhagen) : evaluation.
DESCRIPTION:: Evaluation.\n\nBy Bob Sturm\\\, Aalborg University Copenhagen
.\n\nEvaluation. Evaluating evaluations.* Evaluation of evaluations and th
eir evaluation. Evaluating. Evaluating evaluation and evaluation evaluatin
 g. Evaluations of evaluations and evaluating evaluations of evaluations. F
 inally\\\, evaluation.**\n\n* Evaluation.\n** Evaluating evaluation and ev
aluations.\n\n(NB: I discuss evaluation in music information research\\\,
with particular emphasis paid to music genre recognition\\\, music mood re
cognition\\\, and autotagging. I argue that most approaches to evaluating
such algorithms have no internal and external experimental validity when o
ne wishes to measure their _capacity for recognition_. The example of the
horse Clever Hans\\\, as well as dogs doing math\\\, suffice to illustrate
this point. Algorithms can have very high classification accuracies by vi
rtue of confounds\\\, but current approaches to evaluation do not control
for this.)\n\nBio: Bob L. Sturm is an associate professor in the Audio Ana
lysis Lab (http://www.create.aau.dk/audio/) at Aalborg University Copenhag
en. He is currently funded by a two-year Independent Postdoc Grant from th
e Danish Agency for Science\\\, Technology and Innovation. His research in
terests are: digital signal processing and machine learning for audio and
music signals\\\, algorithms for sparse approximation and compressive samp
ling\\\, and evaluation. Bob received the B.A. degree in physics from Univ
ersity of Colorado\\\, Boulder in 1998\\\, the M.A. degree in Music\\\, Sc
 ience\\\, and Technology\\\, at Stanford University\\\, in 1999\\\, the M.
 S. degree in multimedia engineering in the Media Arts and Technology progr
am at University of California\\\, Santa Barbara (UCSB)\\\, in 2004\\\, an
d finally the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineerin
 g at UCSB\\\, in 2007 and 2009\\\, respectively. During 2009\\\, Dr. Sturm
was a Chateaubriand Post-doctoral Fellow at the Institut Jean Le Rond d'A
 lembert\\\, Equipe Lutheries\\\, Acoustique\\\, Musique (LAM)\\\, at Unive
rsité Pierre et Marie Curie\\\, UPMC Paris 6.
