In this talk\, we will look a t interesting behaviour of electrons in two dimensions. We start by lookin g at a concrete experimental realisation of a two-dimensional electron sys tem. Then\, we will briefly look at the quantum point contact\, an experim ental device used to probe the quantum nature of electron transport. Movin g on to the crux of the talk\, we will consider what happens when we apply a strong magnetic field to a two dimensional electronic system\, leading to the quantum Hall effect.
