SUMMARY: (...): How does landscape heterogeneity affect population dynamics
 ?
DESCRIPTION:: Mathematical models for population dynamics have a longhistor
 y in biomathematics. They are tools to explore the effects ofbirth and dea
 th\, species interaction\, landscape quality and spatialmovement on the pe
 rsistence\, spread and spatial distribution of aspecies. One particular qu
 estion is how spatial variation in landscapeattributes affects the dynamic
 s of populations\, for example in thecontext of species invasions. A relat
 ively recent approach to thisquestion divides a landscape into "patches" a
 nd incorporates small-scaleindividual movement information to predict larg
 e-scale populationdynamics. In this talk\, I will review several aspects o
 f this growing body ofliterature. I will include empirical evidence\, mode
 l derivation\, basicmodel outcomes\, analytical challenges and some future
  ideas. The talk isaimed at a general applied mathematics audience.
