SUMMARY:Mario Román (Oxford): Partial Markov Categories [LSC]
DESCRIPTION:Mario Román: Partial Markov categories are a careful blend of
Markov categories\n(from categorical probability theory) and cartesian res
triction\ncategories (from the algebraic theory of partial computations).\
nPartial Markov categories are an algebra and syntax for Bayesian\ninferen
 ce. They use a string diagrammatic syntax—with a formal\ncorrespondence
to programs—to reason about continuous and discrete\nprobability\, decis
 ion problems (Monty Hall\, Newcomb's)\, the\ncompositional properties of n
ormalization\, and an abstract Bayes'\ntheorem. We will discuss the constr
 uction\, theory\, and applications of\npartial Markov categories\; and con
textualize them in a line of\nresearch that tries to develop the internal
languages of monoidal and\nduoidal categories for probability\, causality\
, and process\ndescription. The talk is based on multiple articles\, inclu
ding joint\nwork with Paweł Sobociński\, Elena Di Lavore\, Matt Earnshaw
 \, and Bart\nJacobs
