DESCRIPTION:Antti Kupiainen: In a probabilistic formulation of quantum fiel
 d theory\na sigma model is a theory of a random field\ndefined on space (a
  manifold in general)\nand taking values in a Riemannian manifold M.\nOn a
  two dimensional space\nsigma models describe statistical mechanics system
 s\,\nimportant examples being the XY model (M=S^1)\nand the Heisenberg mod
 el (M=S^2)\nand the Wess-Zumino-Witten model (M= semi simple Lie group).\n
 They also play a prominent role in string theory\,\nM being the space wher
 e strings move.\nI will briefly discuss the problems\nfor a rigorous analy
 sis of sigma models\nand then explain construction of a sigma model\nwhere
  M is a three dimensional hyperbolic space\ngiving rise to a conformal fie
 ld theory.\nThis theory has an interesting connection to Liouville CFT\nwh
 ich connection in turn has applications to integrable systems\nand geometr
 y.
