SUMMARY:Colloquium (FRUMAM\, St Charles\, Marseille): Quantitative diagonal
 izability (by Nikhil SRIVASTAVA)
DESCRIPTION:Colloquium: Nikhil SRIVASTAVA (UC Berkeley)\nA diagonalizable m
atrix has linearly independent eigenvectors. Since the set of nondiagonal
izable matrices has measure zero\, every matrix is a limit of diagonaliza
ble matrices. We prove a quantitative version of this fact: every n x n c
omplex matrix is within distance delta in the operator norm of a matrix w
hose eigenvectors have condition number poly(n)/delta\, confirming a con
jecture of E. B. Davies. The proof is based adding a complex Gaussian per
turbation to the matrix and studying its pseudospectrum.\nFinally\, we men
tion a recent application of this result to numerical analysis\, yielding
the fastest known provable algorithm for diagonalizing an arbitrary matr
 ix.\nJoint work with J. Banks\, A. Kulkarni\, S. Mukherjee\, J. Garza Varg
