SUMMARY: (Tokyo Institute of Technology and Chiba University\, Japan): Quan
titative estimates in the fluid dynamics of bristled wings of small insect
 s
DESCRIPTION:: Some smallest insects have fringed wings with long bristles (
setae) visually resembling bird feathers. They are active fliers\, which i
mplies that bristled wings produce enough force to support the animal body
weight and propel it through the air. Aerodynamic function of the bristle
d wings is a curious topic for its biological context as well as for the p
eculiarities of the air flow conditions. In this regard\, experiments and
numerical simulations have been carried out to evaluate aerodynamic force
generation capacity of the wings of a miniature featherwing beetle Paratup
osa placentis. The aerodynamic force coefficients have been determined fro
m a dynamically scaled force measurement experiment with rotating bristled
and membrane wing models in a glycerin tank. They have been used as numer
ical validation data for a computational fluid dynamics simulation using a
n adaptive Navier-Stokes solver. The latter has provided point-wise inform
ation about the flow field\, thus allowing to evaluate flow parameters suc
h as leakiness and permeability\, and gain an understanding of the underly
ing fluid-dynamic mechanisms.\nDr. Dmitry Kolomenskiy\, Tokyo Institute of
