SUMMARY:Oleg Szehr (University of Vienna\, Austria): Spectral methods for q
 uantum Markov chains
DESCRIPTION:Oleg Szehr: We begin this talk with an introduction to the theo
ry of quantum Markov chains. Such chains constitute a natural quantum-mech
anical generalization of the concept of a Markov chain and are used to mod
el the evolution of certain quantum systems. Both in the classical and qua
ntum context many applications require estimates that quantify convergence
time and stability of the chain. We develop a powerful framework that yie
lds such estimates in terms of the spectrum of the transition map in the s
econd part of the talk. The methods employed are new even to the well stud
ied theory of classical Markov chains. The key observation is to relate th
e original problem of bounding a function of a transition map of a Markov
chain to a Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem in Wiener algebra. \nThes
