SUMMARY:Virgile Guemard (I2M/INRIA): The structure of a quantum memory

 antum bits of information (qubits) are very fragile entities. Subject to t
 he noise of the environment\, they can disappear or be corrupted. Major ef
 forts are currently being put on solving the problem of storing qubits for
  long periods of time. In this seminar\, I will explain how a quantum memo
 ry can be obtained from certain chain complexes over binary coefficients. 
 I will then give an overview of recent progress in the field and the curre
 nt state of the art. I will finally present a new approach\, called the 
 “lift”\, to design such quantum memories based on covering maps and\, 
 if time allows\, I will expose some explicit constructions inspired by geo
 metric group theory.
