DESCRIPTION:: We present the Langlands-Shahidi method for studying automorp
 hic L-functions\, which we now make available in positive characteristic a
 nd we present an important application to the unitary groups. We take a gl
 obally generic cuspidal automorphic representation of a unitary group and 
 produce a base change to Res_K/k GL(N). We combine the Langlands-Shahidi m
 ethod with the Converse Theorem and then use the exact Ramanujan bounds of
  Laurent Lafforgue for general linear groups to establish the Ramanujan co
