DESCRIPTION:Willem Verplanke: The Standard Model is\, alongside General Rel ativity\, one of the biggest successes in physics. It has been tested to a tremendous accuracy by e.g. experiments at CERN\, Fermilab or KEK. One po ssibility to make predictions for these experiments\, is by means of Latti ce Quantum Chromodynamics (lattice QCD). In the Standard Model\, space-tim e is treated as continuous\, while on the lattice it is discretized. This has some alleviating consequences for calculations at low energy. At the s ame time\, it has many technical and some conceptual drawbacks that cannot be ignored. In this talk\, we focus on one of these conceptual conundrums \, called the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem. To delve into this issue\, we star t by inspecting the rich zoology of particles in the Standard Model.
