The technological platforms that enable and mediate our digital lives collect huge amounts of heterogeneous data on behaviors, preferences, and individual histories. Increasingly, these data can be used to build mathematical models and to design algorithms that can used to advance our understanding of the world, improve the performance of critical systems and infrastructures, and shape decisions and policies. This talk will reflect on the unfolding impact of so-called « big data » techniques on research and society, highlighting opportunities for research and society, as well as discussing emerging challenges.
