Mathematical models from toys to graphene and 2d crystals

For many mathematicians the frustration is that the beautiful concrete ideas we see in our heads do not translate to other people outside of mathematics. Mathematical images and objects are a get way to get past this barrier and can sometimes be useful to help understand what is happening even for mathematicians. I will start by showing some of the mathematical materials that I have created, images, wooden models and more. We will then explore a system where hook together paper pieces demonstrate curvature, and I will finish by describing a new project with Jeremy Van Horn-Morris and Salvador Barraza Lopez in Arkansas where we are using these models to understand the differential geometry of graphene and other 2d crystals.
