We will show that for a ternary alphabet, balanced circular words form a subset of the circular words with abelian complexity ≤3. We recall the known classification of words for the former set, and give a complete classification for the latter. For balanced circular words a graphical representation as discrete approximations generalizing the definition of Christoffel words to a 3-dimensional space will be proposed.
On a final note, we will discuss the problem of classification of balanced circular words for an N-ary alphabet, and say a few words about motivation emerged from the construction of musical scales.
