Dans un article célèbre, The residual entropy of square ice, (Physical Review 1967), E.H.

On the entropy of square ice.

The square ice is a model initially introduced by L. Pauling, which consists (in the vocabulary of symbolic dynamics) in an SFT (subshift of finite type) describing the possible states of a two-dimensional ice, whose entropy results from the freedom of placement of the hydrogen atoms composing the water molecules. In a famous article, The residual entropy of square ice, (Physical Review 1967), E.H. Lieb gave mathematical arguments indicating that the topological entropy of this SFT would be equal to (3/2)*ln(4/3). These arguments provide proof under the hypothesis of several conditions not verified in the article. In my talk, I will present the ice model, and the techniques used to approach this problem.
