Inspired by recent results regarding recognizability and desubstitution (these terms will be explained) for morphisms of free monoids, analogous questions for (injective) homomorphisms of free groups will be considered. The results presented in the talk include a surprising relation to the celebrated Hanna-Neumann conjecture for subgroups of free groups, and as an upshot, we go back to free monoids and ask, whether some of the methods and insights obtained in the free group setting may be valid or helpful in this cousin world.
