The Witt ring of a field F is an invariant that essentially classifies symmetric bilinear forms over F. Its functoriality is useful to attack arithmetic questions over number fields by comparing their Witt ring to those of their completions, in the spirit of the Hasse principle. In this talk, we propose to define the Witt ring and describe its basic properties, focusing on the case of ordered fields which is relevant to geometric aspects of theory of symmetric bilinear forms.
