Given a hyperbolic manifold M and a homotopy class of maps from M to the circle, there is an associated geodesic « stretch » lamination encoding at which points in M the Lipschitz constant of an optimal map in the homotopy class must be large. I will discuss these laminations in the context of different norms on the cohomology of a hyperbolic 3-manifold and discuss how to give the first 3-dimensional examples where these laminations can be identified.
