Smoothing group of homeomorphisms of the real line: the case of Baumslag-Solitar groups

Given a group of homeomorphisms of the real line, a natural problem is to try to understand when this group is conjugate to a group of diffeomorphisms, and also to elucidate the optimal regularity within the conjugacy class. This program has shown to be fruitful in the class of abelian, and nilpotent, groups as well as for some families of right-angled Artin groups. In this talk, I will report on a recent project joint with Franco Gomez, where we address this problem for the case of the Baumslag-Solitar groups BS(m,n).
