Séminaire AA — Iterative Coupling Algorithms For Mixed-Dimensionnal Poromechanical Models In Faulted Geological Systems

Coupled poromechanical models are essential to assess risks in applications such as geothermal energy production and CO₂ sequestration, where fault reactivation may trigger leakage or induced seismicity. These models simulate complex interactions between multiphase fluid flow, rock deformation, and fault mechanics. Their numerical implementation is challenging due to geological heterogeneity, complex geometries, and strong multiphysics couplings.

This talk focuses on iterative splitting schemes for a mixed‑dimensional poromechanical model with embedded fractures. In a frictionless regime, where fracture slip may occur but does not introduce additional nonlinear frictional effects, the contact mechanics reduces to a linear problem and the corresponding fixed‑point map can be shown to be a contraction when the stabilization parameters are optimally chosen, yielding robust and efficiently convergent iterations. When friction is taken into account along the fracture, however, the contact problem becomes nonlinear and only semi‑smooth, and the same splitting may stagnate or fail to converge.

To address this difficulty, we combine two ingredients: (i) an adaptive strategy that updates the stabilization so as to track, in a cheap way, the evolving Schur complement of the nonlinear mechanics; and (ii) Anderson acceleration applied to the fixed‑point iteration. Numerical experiments show that these approaches improve robustness in the nonlinear frictional slip regime and significantly reduce the number of fixed-point iterations.
