I will give an overview of some important problems in random matrix theory in the last decade, related to evaluating the operator norm of various classes of random matrices in large dimension. I will explain some motivations for studying these kind of problems and describe some recent results. A large part of the results described are based on past and ongoing collaboration with Charles Bordenave. Time allowing, I will delve into some techniques which we had to develop or to improve.
