A history of symmetric tensor categories

In this talk I will give an overview of the study of the structural theory of abelian symmetric monoidal categories over a field. We will start with origins and motivations in algebraic geometry and representation theory and move via classical results of Deligne in characteristic zero to exciting recent developments in positive characteristic.
