We study a recently introduced model called Exclusion Process with Energy (EPE). In this model, particles hop between neighbouring sites of a lattice, subject to the exclusion constraint that each site can contain at most one particle. Besides, particles carry an integer-valued energy, which can be exchanged unit by unit between adjacent particles. The dynamics therefore conserves two quantities: mass and energy.

Nonlinear Fluctuating Hydrodynamics (NFH) theory reveals that the EPE is richer than conventional lattice gases in the sense that a broader variety of universality classes can emerge from the fluctuations of this model. After applying the NFH framework and describing the resulting classification, we focus on a choice of parameters that makes both normal modes fall into the KPZ universality class. We rigorously establish this prediction using a second-order Boltzmann Gibbs principle, whose proof relies on a spectral-gap estimate and equivalence-of-ensembles for the EPE.
