Presentation of Laboratories
MAP5, CNRS UMR 8145
The laboratory was established in 2000 to federate researchs in applied mathematics at Paris Descartes University. Its ambition is to establish in Paris Descartes a high-level research in applied mathematics, capable of developing mathematical methods required by other components of the university, especially the biomedical sciences. The MAP5 has experts in Statistics, Numerical Analysis, Probability Theory, and Image Processing. It gathers a range of skills which is large enough to cover much of the potential needs of the biomedical sciences and to create a synergy between theoretical developments and applications. The project presented here involves many complementary experts from the Probability Theory and Image Processing teams of the MAP5. The publications of these experts covers not only the study of a wide range of random field models (ball and bubble models, anisotropic Brownian fields,...) but also of numerous statistical approaches to images (a contrario methods, Markov random fields, stochastic approximation expectation maximization,...).

LTCI, CNRS UMR 5141
The LTCI is a large laboratory associated with CNRS which brings together the research activities of the School of Telecommunications (TELECOM ParisTech). Two teams of the LTCI contribute to the project: the TII (Image processing and interpretation) team and the STA (Statistics and Applications) team, both from the TSI (Signal and Image processing) department. The TII team is developing methodologies and theoretical tools for Image Processing, including mathematical methods in Computer Vision and Medical Imaging. The STA team is working on statistical methods for information processing and their applications to Applied Statistics and Signal Processing. Specific areas of research include long range dependent processes, self-similar processses, shot noise processes and, in a joint work with the TII team, spatial point processes for modeling natural images. Such an expertise is particularly relevant for developping statistical inference methods in the framework of extended fractional Brownian fields and Germ-Grains fields.

CTI, Inserm U658
This laboratory has been working for about 15 years on the characterization of trabecular bone textures from radiographs. It has produced dozens of original publications, and was the basis for the establishment of an independent industrial society (D3A Medical Systems, Orleans, France) dedicated to this application. This is a reference laboratory in France and internationally in this field. Its members are authors of several books and articles of development, they are responsible for regularly invited lectures in France or abroad. The Director, Claude-Laurent Benhamou, established an annual seminar on the bone quality in collaboration with the laboratories Servier. Several manufacturers of the pharmaceutical industry collaborate with the laboratory (Servier, MSD, Amgen, Roche, GSK,...). An originality of this laboratory work is to include several multidisciplinary works concerning Medicine, Epidemiology, Image Processing, the evaluation of the drug, several biophysical and biological aspects, and Mathematics in connection with the locomotor system. Close collaborations exist with several French and foreign teams (USA, Australia, Tunisia, Morocco, Israel, Belgium, Holland). In addition, INSERM U658 is strengthened by the participation of scientists from other laboratories: Pierre Levitz of the Laboratory of Condensed Matter Physics (CNRS UMR 7643) at the Ecole Polytechnique in Palaiseau and Rachid Jennane of EA 1715 at the University of Orleans.

Inserm UMR 1018
The research team is focused on the epidemiological studies of relationships between nutrition, hormones and cancer, based on survey data E3N. E3N is a cohort study involving 100 000 women volunteers. Information on the way of life (food, taking hormone treatments,...) and other changes in their health status (in particular the occurrence of cancer) are collected by self-questionnaires every 2 years since 1990. These are complemented by biological data, obtained on 25 000 volunteers, from a blood sample stored for subsequent doses (case-control studies in the cohort). E3N is the French part of EPIC, a large European study coordinated by the International Center for Research on Cancer involving almost 500 000 Europeans in 10 countries. Two cancer are particularly studied because of their high incidence: the breast and colon-rectum cancers. To date, 3208 cases of breast cancer have so far been registered.
The analysis of certain factors of the reproductive life, yet little or not described, is in progress (characteristics of menstruation, cumulative number of cycles in life, infertility). They are also studying the role of taking hormone replacement therapy: E3N apart, no study has data on treatments prescribed in France which are different from treatments used abroad. They began the study of dietary factors. They analyze the eating habits by region of residence, social status and alcohol consumption. Concerning the relationship food-breast cancer, they are interest in consumption of fats.
