The identification of sound sources is a common problem in aero-acoustics. Different parameters are sought, among these are optimal signals and positions of the sources. An adjoint-based approach for optimal sound source identification, which employs computational aero-acoustic techniques, is presented. The approach allows considering complex situations, such as non-homogeneous base flow, thermal stratification as well as complex geometries.
Three different applications are presented as a proof-of-concept: optimization of a sound reinforcement setup, the localization of (moving) sound sources, and transition control by external acoustic forcing.sed methods significantly improve our abilities to understand and optimize acoustical and fluid dynamical systems.
