Abstract : The Uncle Paul’s Conjecture is related to the following problem in Euclidean geometry : given a triangle, what is the largest square fitting inside it ? Given the simplicity of this statement, I invite
you to take two minutes (or more…) and think about an intuitive solution and a strategy to tackle this problem.
you to take two minutes (or more…) and think about an intuitive solution and a strategy to tackle this problem.
After formally rephrasing this statement and the related conjecture by Boisseau et al., we will highlight some principles to guide us to the solution. Thanks to some carefully-chosen systems of equations, we will expose the solution to this problem, which carries some non-trivial patterns. (There will be enough diagrams and drawings to compensate those equations. We’re still doing Euclidean geometry.) Then, we will focus on related problems and applications of these tools.
