Semistable reduction of covers of degree p

This talk is about the semistable reduction of algebraic curves. We will discuss several ways of describing semistable models of curves, among them Berkovich’s theory of non-archimedean analytic curves. This unlocks the different function of Cohen, Temkin, and Trushin as a tool for studying wild covers of curves. As the most important example, we will treat the reduction of plane quartics at p=3.
