Abstract : Have you ever looked at the keyboard of a piano? A nice alternating pattern between white and black keys. Wait a minute! That’s weird: why are the black keys grouped by groups of 2, then 3, then 2, then 3… Why isn’t there a black key between each white key? Why did we break such a beautiful symmetry?
In order to understand this pattern, one needs to go beyond notes and to focus on frequencies. In this journey, we’ll realise that the reasons why we choose certain notes instead of others becomes cristal clear once we see them through modular arithmetics. (Don’t worry, this only means that we’re gonna put numbers on a clock.)
