How to understand music with mathematics ?

Abstract: How to understand music with mathematics ? This seminar aims at answering the following questions:
– why have only a few rhythms been selected in a wide range of cultures worldwide?
– how to generate new rhythms that “sound good”?
(- if time allows it: how to dance Salsa?)
Unlike most research in musicology, our approach (based on a few papers published in the last decade) is based on a geometric representation of these rhythms. This approach enables making intensive use of several mathematical tools like complex numbers, entropy, prime numbers, Fourier transform and so on.
This seminar does not require any prior knowledge in mathematics or music.
