Cilia and flagella exhibit a characteristic periodic motion that enables them
to swim efficiently in viscous fluids. This motion arises from a active internal
structure that runs along the entire length of the filament, known as the ax-
oneme. Within the axoneme, forces are generated by molecular motors that act
collectively to produce the filament’s curvature.
After analyzing a first model for molecular motors, we will introduce sev-
eral formulations of coupled partial differential equation systems describing ac-
tivation within a periodic cell. Theoretical results will be complemented by
numerical simulations.
