Geodesic subspaces in arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds

We will discuss the problem of classifying immersed totally geodesic subspaces of complete, finite volume hyperbolic manifolds and orbifolds. We will introduce some techniques coming from the theory of algebraic groups that allow us to construct an abundance of examples of geodesic subspaces in arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds. Finally we will show that, in the arithmetic case, all geodesic subspaces can be constructed using these methods. This is joint work with M. Belolipetski, N. Bogachev and A. Kolpakov.
