Two-dimensional Conformal Field Theory (CFT) is a research topic that has attracted a lot of attention
in both the physics and mathematics community since its inception by Belavin-Polyakov-Zamolodchikov in 1984.
However answering the seemingly simple question “What is a Conformal Field Theory?”
is not as simple as it seems and many different approaches have been developed to address this issue,
ranging from probability to representation theory, conformal geometry or Vertex Operator Algebras.
In this talk we will discuss a few connections between some of these different perspectives:
namely we will explain to what extent the probabilistic approach to CFT
based on the consideration of Gaussian Free Fields
is equivalent to the more algebraicviewpoint of Vertex Operator Algebras.
Based on this correspondence we will describe how to translate
results stemming from representation theory of W-algebras
into actual statements for Selberg and Dotsenko-Fateev type integrals,
providing a systematic method to address the Mukhin-Varchenko conjecture.
