Lambda Fleming-Viot processes and Lambda coalescents were introduced in the early 2000’s
as a generalisation of the Fleming-Viot process and the Kingman coalescent, respectively.
Such processes arise naturally as a description of large and well-mixed populations
in which individuals occasionally produce large numbers of offspring,
but in which the total number of individuals is kept fixed.
After a general introduction to these objects I will present some recent results
on how the same objects arise in population models with fluctuating population size,
notably in branching processes with logistic competition,
when the carrying capacity tends to infinity.
