I will talk about how to formulate (and outline an idea of a proof of) a positive characteristic analogue of the theorem of Kashiwara and Malgrange about the relationship, in characteristic zero, between the Bernstein-Sato polynomial and the eigenvalues of the monodromy action on nearby cycles. It will give a cohomological explanation for some of the arithmetic phenomena in the Bernstein—Sato theory in positive characteristic. This is a joint work in progress with Eamon Quinlan and Daichi Takeuchi.
