Topology in Physics, application to superconductors

Date(s) : 04/04/2024   iCal
17h00 - 18h00

Abstract : Following on from last week talk, we will delve into a main example of topological tools: the theory of unconventional superconductors. Superconductivity was first observed a century ago. However, the BCS theory, the first satisfying understanding of this phenomenon, was formalized in 1957. This satisfaction lasted a couple of decades, until experimentalists discovered a variety of exotic superconductors, poorly described by BCS. Over the last 20 years, the use of topology provided a more relevant background to describe these materials. In this talk, we will briefly recall the phenomenology of superconductors. Then we will explain the BCS theory. Finally, we will get to a theory beyond BCS, the so-called chiralsuperconductors.
