In the 60s, Levine and Tristram introduced the signature function, a knot invariant with strong connections to the Alexander polynomial and four-dimensional topology. After an introduction to the signature function focussing on these connections, we compare the signature functions of some classes of positive knots. In particular, we show that the signature function of a positive arborescent Hopf plumbing is monotonic.
