The Hippocampe courses have their origins in the Pythéas mathematics laboratory at the IRES in Aix-Marseille (formerly IREM):
A group of trainees comes to the university for three days, for an introduction to mathematical research. Supervised by researchers, they reflect on mathematical problems, ask questions and develop hypotheses, then experiment, discuss, debate and communicate, just as researchers do every day in their work. Finally, they present their work to other researchers at a poster session.
