We describe two problems regarding counting graphs on surfaces, which generalize the idea of counting closed geodesics on surfaces. The first part of the talk, concerning theta-graphs on flat tori, is joint work with Aulicino and Richman, and the second, concerning triangulations on hyperbolic surfaces, is joint with Aougab.
