The goal of this seminar is to introduce the ‘Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin’ method (HDG), a relatively novel numerical method for PDEs. The method gained popularity after 2009 and has been in constant developement since. It offers the sought after features of Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods, while being more computationally efficient. The method will be applied to 1D advection-diffusion equations and some simulations will be shown.

The seminar will be be split into three sections:

(i) an introduction to Continuous Galerkin (CG) methods

(ii) an introduction to DG methods

(iii) the HDG method as applied to a 1D convection-diffusion equation.
