The problem of congruent is incredibly basic:  which are the numbers that are the area of a right triangle with rational edges?

We needed a single line to state the problem, but we would need a complete book to give only a conjectural solution.

The goal of this talk is to explain the first ideas of the solution, that is: translating this problem into a problem about elliptic curves, and introducing some of the basic notion of the theory of elliptic curves.  If time allows it (and I will try my hardest to make sure it does) I will talk about L-functions and the modularity theorem, analytic object associated to elliptic curves in connection with the so called modular forms.
