The zero set of a complex polynomial in two variables is in particular a punctured compact surface, we are going to compactify it by extending it to the zero set of a homogeneous complex polynomial in the complex projective plane, we will then get a compact surface and we will see that it’s genus is equal to (d-1)(d-2)/2 where d id the degree of the polynomial.
