The Institut de Mathématiques de Marseille (I2M, UMR 7373) is a CNRS/Aix-Marseille University/Centrale Marseille Joint Research Unit. It has about 130 teacher-researchers, about 30 CNRS researchers, about 15 technical and administrative staff, about 60 PhD students and about 20 post-doctoral researchers.
The I2M was formed by the merger, on January 1, 2014, of the LATP (Laboratory of Analysis, Topology and Probability) and the IML (Institute of Mathematics of Luminy). Its scientific structure is based on five groups:
- Applied Analysis (AA)
- Arithmetic, Geometry, Logic and Representations (AGLR)
- Analyse, Géométrie, Topologie (AGT)
- Mathematics of Randomness (ALEA)
- Geometry, Dynamics, Arithmetic and Combinatorics and their interactions (GDAC)
which cover a broad spectrum of pure and applied mathematics, as well as a large number of application areas (scientific or industrial). See the 2016 activity report.
The I2M is mainly located on three sites: the Centre de Mathématiques et Informatique at Château Gombert, and the campus of Luminy, near the calanques, are the two main sites (premises are also used on the St Charles campus).
I2M is involved in many national and international research projects and actions, and is a partner of the institut d’Excellence Archimède, AMIDEX and the Chaire Jean-Morlet. It is also a member of the Fédération de Recherche des Unités de Mathématiques de Marseille (FRUMAM), of the Société Mathématique de France (SMF) and of the Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (SMAI).
